Chevra Kadisha
The Jewish Chapel
Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath (BCMH) owns and operates the Seattle Jewish Chapel funeral home. The Seattle Jewish Chapel (SJC) operates out of the Mel Wolf Memorial Tahara Facility, which is located next to the Mikvah on the synagogue property. Seattle Jewish Chapel is a full service funeral home, and caters to all members of the greater Seattle Jewish community who want their loved ones prepared in the traditional Orthodox fashion. The Seattle Chevra Kadisha provides services such as Shmira (guarding) of the deceased and the Tahara (ritual washing).
The Seattle Jewish Chapel handles all the details around the passing of a loved one from the initial time of death through the completion of the funerary burial, including caskets and preparation. In addition, the Chapel provides pre-arrangement services for those interested in pre-planning for their funeral. BCMH members receive special pricing for both funerals and cemetery plots.
In addition to providing funeral home services, BCMH operates and owns the Bikur Cholim (1340 N. 115th St.) and Machzikay Hadath (1214 N. 167th St.) cemeteries. Burial plots for interment are available to purchase at the time of need or can be pre-purchased and pre-paid.
The Jewish traditions related to death and mourning are intended to recognize death as a part of life. Burial takes place as soon after death as possible. Traditional caskets are of plain wood.
Your Rabbi should be consulted for specific questions about burial and mourning practices such as the observance of shiva, recitation of the Kaddish, observing a yahrzeit, and attending yizkor services.
