Early Morning Tallis and Tefillin
The late sunrise affects the earliest time to make a beracha on tallis and tefillin. Note the effect of Daylight Time in March. Rav Moshe Feinstein rules that tallis and tefillin may be put on earlier (tallis any time, tefillin 72 minutes, or-when absolutely necessary-90 minutes before sunrise), but a beracha may be made no earlier than 35-40 minutes before sunrise. This time can shift daily, but for quick reference we provide these listings based on 35 minutes:

JULIE’S PROGRAM CORNER
Hi everyone! It’s not easy for me to pick a favorite event and/or program at BCMH – there have been many that I’ve loved and been happy to be a part of over the years - but this past week’s Shabbos Chanukah Dinner will go down in history as the one I am most proud of! We had 180 (Yes, 180!) at the dinner and with the help of so many unbelievably fantastic volunteers (around 50+), it seemed to go off “effortlessly.” The food was delicious (and hot – not an easy feat on a Friday night!), the tables were set beautifully, the room was full of festive Chanukah decorations, there was lots of singing and ruach and people were honestly just happy to be there! Rabbi Zev Goldberg, who is fast becoming one of our favorite guest speakers thus far, spoke right after the dinner and his speech was enjoyed by many (he’s THAT good); we were even on the ball enough to ensure that our dinner attendees had childcare provided for their children (Thank you Ari Hoffman!). Please take a look at this week’s Shabbos Highlights flyer for all the names of our volunteers. A special Thank You to Larry Russak and Dr. Marc Kravette for overseeing the dinner and the BCMH Sisterhood Co-Chairs, Rhonda Rubin and Hanna Esther Begoun, for helping us recruit volunteers. Thank you Larry and Shelly Russak for the sushi last Shabbos in honor of the anniversary of Josh’s Bar Mitzvah parsha, which he did an excellent job reciting! Sushi is becoming more popular than cholent! Starting with pre-Chanukah programs like Rabbi Emlen’s Oil Press Demo, Baking Chanukah Cookies and Decorating the Social Hall put us all in the right frame of mind for this glorious holiday. And glorious, it was!
I am looking very forward to having Rabbi Avrohom and Rooksie David speak this Shabbos, right after morning services. Please check e-newsletter for titles of their classes.
YAC is going Ice Skating! Date and time will be made available this week.
I am home nursing a nasty cold so my best wishes to all of you for a germ-free, awesome Shabbos!
