Today’s Spokesman- Review newspaper (Spokane WA Jan. 15, 2011) states that 120 years ago, “the city’s Jewish citizens were raising money to build the first Jewish temple” in the state of Washington. “In 1892, Temple Emanu-El was dedicated.” I see you are celebrating your 120th anniversary this coming March. Congratulations! What exactly are you celebrating, the formation of your congregation or the building of a house of worship? Who was first, Spokane or Seattle? I’d love to know the answer!

      Hi Sylvia,

Bikur Cholim was formed in 1891 according to all documents and bylaws. BC was the first official synagogue. Someone at the paper should fact check these things unless someone wants to nitpick over the differences between synagogue and temple

My Great Great Grandfather was Hirsch Genss.
Certainly there was an evolution between 1891 when Chevra Bikur Cholim was incorporated and 1892 when the first synagogue was organized.
What is important is celebrating the continuity of the community for all these years. What a great way to raise money for a new sefer torah. I imagine the one that Rabbi Genss gave the community in 1893 is out of commission.

    Wishing you a wonderful celebration,
